FAQ

What is the difference between Forge and Forge Pro?

Forge is read-only and safe on live sites. Forge Pro is a separate standalone plugin that adds PHP execution, WP-CLI, sandbox and direct file writes, and database writes: 39 tools in 9 groups.

Do I need to install both?

No. Pro replaces Forge. Activating one deactivates the other, and settings carry over.

Is it safe to install on my live store?

No. It is meant for test and staging sites. On anything that looks like production, every power tool is blocked by default. A hostname-typed override exists for rare cases. See Live-Site Block.

What if I clone or migrate a site with the override on?

The override is locked to the exact domain it was enabled on. If the domain changes, it turns itself off and power tools return to blocked until you confirm again.

Does the license gate any features?

No. It only controls automatic updates and support. All 39 tools work with or without a license.

Are database writes reversible?

Yes, for tables up to 5,000 rows. The whole target table is snapshotted first and wp_restore_snapshot reverts it. Larger tables are refused. See Snapshots & Restore.

Is running PHP reversible?

No. Raw PHP has no automatic snapshot, which is why it needs the I have a backup in place acknowledgement. Keep a real backup.

Does the AI write straight to my live files?

Not by default. New code goes to a sandbox draft and must be promoted with confirm: true. Direct writes are a separate group, off by default, with their own Allow direct live writes switch.

Can someone upload a file to the sandbox without a login?

Yes, with wp_create_upload_link: a one-time, expiring URL that accepts POST uploads into the sandbox only, rate-limited per IP.

Can long WP-CLI commands time out?

Use wp_run_wp_cli_background to queue the command and poll it with wp_check_wp_cli_job.

What gets logged?

Everything, in full, including the PHP code or command that ran. That is deliberate: if something goes wrong, seeing exactly what ran matters more than hiding details.

Can I turn off direct file writes or database writes?

Both are off by default, and any group can be switched off independently under Tools.
